In continuation of my despatch No.342 of the 2nd ultimo, I have the honour to transmit to you for the information of the bacteriologist the enclosed copy of a letter from the Acting Colonial Secretary of the Straits Settlements forwarding a list of the necessary apparatus for a bacteriological laboratory.

2. With regard to paragraph 3 of my despatch under reference, I have to inform you that no provision has been made in next year's Estimates for a bacteriologist as your sanction had not been received at the time when the supply bill was passed.

Your most obedient

Humble Servant,

Henry A. Blake

The Governor estimates this general balance at $388,000.

The estimated surplus for 1902 is $47,000 only; but this amount will clearly be exceeded by the cost of the laboratory and the salary of the bacteriologist, his passage, &c. The only item is a vote of $10,000 out of $30,000 for the Institute in the 1902 Estimates.

Estimated cost of the Building, &c.
